泰戈爾一生的創作詩歌受印度古典文學、西方詩歌和孟加拉民間抒情詩歌的影響，多為不押韻、不雕琢的自由詩和散文詩；他的小說受西方小說的影響，又有創新，特别是把詩情畫意融入其中，形成獨特風格。

God is ashamed when the prosperous boasts of his special favour.
