作為玄學派大師，Donne走的是一條以形象比喻傳達思想，通過思想表達感情的新路。《離别辭：莫悲傷》是1611年作者随羅伯特·特魯裡爵士出使巴黎時，在臨行前贈給妻子的詩。在這首詩中，Donne把夫妻關系喻為圓規兩隻腳的關系。妻子是定腳，坐鎮中心，當丈夫離别（即一隻腳移動）時，妻子（定腳）也随之轉動，喻夫妻雖然分離，卻彼此相連，互相支撐。隻有妻子（定腳）堅定地坐鎮中心，才“能使我的圓圈圓得完美”，暗示愛人的忠貞不渝才能使他一生美滿。該詩贊頌了戀人之間更深層次的精神之愛，不因分離而受到破壞。

    As virtuous men pass mildly away,
　　And whisper to their souls to go,
　　Whilst some of their sad friends do say,
　　The breath goes now, and some say no;
